When it comes to interior design, trends are constantly changing. A popular paint color or furnishing one year may be a thing of the past the next. To help homeowners know which trends will grow in popularity this year and which ones are going out of style, Thumbtack released its “ins and outs” for home design in 2025. Ahead, a closer look at each trend featured in the report.
Ins
These are the trends that Thumbtack experts predict will be in style in 2025.
Refresh and Redo
According to Thumbtack, many homeowners will invest in home design improvements in 2025. The report states that almost two-thirds of homeowners are budgeting at least $20,000 for these improvements this year.
Investing in Staying Home
This year, more people will invest in their kitchens, living and family rooms, and outdoor decks and patios to make spending time at home more enjoyable.
Biophilic Design
Biophilic design is expected to reign supreme in 2025. This home design style is all about bringing the outdoors in and making the home feel more connected to nature. When Thumbtack experts asked interior designers what the top trend of the year will be, most said biophilia.
Smart Features
Experts believe more homeowners will rely on artificial intelligence to help plan their home layouts in 2025. Additionally, smart features like smart thermometers, smart lighting, and smart appliances are expected to grow in popularity this year.
Well-Loved Pieces
Vintage and antique pieces have been popular for quite some time, and homeowners will continue to buy pre-loved treasures in 2025. According to 43 percent of Thumbtack experts, vintage décor and furnishings will be on-trend this year.
Castlecore
Details and décor inspired by the medieval era—think copper pots, heavy fabrics, and dark paint colors—will take over interior design in 2025.
Outs
These are the trends that Thumbtack experts predict will go out of style in 2025.
Building New
Homeowners are working with what they already have in 2025. Per Thumbtack, 57 percent of experts predict that people will prioritize remodeling over building and buying new this year.
Ultra-Modern Design
Ultra-modern design is going out of style as more people embrace nature-inspired design. Ranjana Mangharam, Thumbtack expert and owner of Design by Ranj, predicts minimalist Japandi styles and Scandinavian styles will be more evident this year as earthy designs and natural color palettes increase in popularity.
Plastic and Synthetic Materials
Homeowners are becoming more conscious about the materials they’re using in their homes. Instead of plastic and synthetic materials, they’re opting for natural, untreated wood.
Overhead and Artificial Lighting
In 2025, Thumbtack experts expect homeowners to prioritize natural light over artificial lighting by incorporating larger windows and skylights in their spaces.
Overconsumption
This year is all about making old items new again, according to Thumbtack. From rearranging furniture and investing in antique and heirloom pieces to painting walls with a fresh coat of paint, people are finding ways to refresh their homes without overconsuming.
