2024 5-door Mahindra Thar Roxx vs 3-door Thar: Exterior Design Differences Explained
The 3-door model of the Mahindra Thar was always an attractive off-roader with a good road presence. But, it missed out on certain design elements and exterior features, for which buyers had to rely on aftermarket options. In the newly launched Thar Roxx, Mahindra has updated the exterior design and added some new features, thereby filling the gaps which were there with the 3-door model. In this story, we take you through the two Thars’ exterior design differences:
5-door Mahindra Thar Roxx vs 3-door Thar: Design Differences
To begin with the front, the 5-door model of the Thar gets a new 6-slat grille which is wider and bigger than that of the 3-door model. It looks more dominating, while other key additions upfront are the C-shaped LED DRLs and the round LED headlights, which give the off-roader a modern look. The indicator and fog lamp position remains unchanged, but they too are LEDs now. The new Thar also gets a wider and beefed up bumper in adherence to its larger size.
These updates to the fascia are a nice welcome as they make the SUV look more appealing and dominating. However, staying true to its roots, the 5-door version of the Thar continues to get the boxy silhouette and retains the overall design language seen on the 3-door iteration.
Moving to the side, the Thar Roxx gets an extra set of doors for easier ingress and egress and well-integrated pillar-mounted handles for opening them. Apart from that, it gets larger 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels (for the higher trims) compared to the smaller Thar’s 18-inch alloy wheels.

It also gets the “ROXX” badging on the front fender and a triangular rear quarter glass, which adds a new flavour to the profile. The 3-door model on the other hand, has a rectangular glass which extends till the rear. You will also notice that the Roxx gets chunkier squared-out wheel arches even at the rear wheel arch, compared to the smaller Thar’s round ones.
Keen-eyed observers will also notice the 360-degree camera placed on the ORVM, a feature not available with the 3-door Thar. In case the badging on the fender wasn’t enough, you also get the “Thar” moniker embossed on the ORVM.
The Thar Roxx is the longer, wider and taller SUV of the two and offers an additional 400 mm wheelbase over the smaller Thar. To check out the exact numbers and differences in the dimensions, head over to our story.
The 5-door Thar is available in 7 different colour options, while the Thar 3-door gets only 5 hues.
The 7 exterior shades of the larger Thar are: Everest White, Stealth Black, Deep Forest (green), Tango Red, Nebula Blue, Battleship Grey and Burnt Sienna. The 3-door Thar is available in Everest White, AcquaMarine, Red Rage, Napoli Black and Galaxy Grey colour options.
Coming to the rear, the Thar Roxx features slightly tweaked C-shaped LED tail lights. If you pay attention, you’ll notice that the ‘Thar’ wordmark has been deleted from these tail lights, which is available in the 3-door version.
Both the Thars get a spare alloy wheel mounted on the tailgate, but look closely and you will see that the Thar 5-door also gets a camera on it as part of the 360-degree camera. Apart from these minor tweaks, the rear remains identical to the 3-door Thar and someone who does not know both the SUVs well enough, might not be able to set them apart easily.
A point to note is that the Thar Roxx is available with a hard top (roof) only, while the 3-door model gets a convertible option as well, which is something the enthusiasts and adventure lovers would want. Although, the Roxx does get a truly huge panoramic sunroof. Is that tradeoff fair? Let us know in the comments.
