Concerns over venue readiness grow as Karachi struggles to meet deadlines ahead of the marquee event.

January 30, 2025: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) remains optimistic about Karachi’s National Stadium hosting matches for the Champions Trophy, set to begin on February 19, despite growing concerns about the venue’s preparedness. The PCB has invested PKR 12 billion in renovating venues in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi, but significant delays have raised doubts.

According to a report in Pakistan’s leading English daily Dawn, completing the renovation work before the January 31 deadline appears “impossible.” While PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi inspected Rawalpindi Stadium and expressed confidence in hosting the event as planned, experts believe the challenges are daunting.

Renovation Delays and Challenges

Bilal Chohan, the supervisor responsible for Karachi’s renovation, cited logistical issues as a major hurdle. Essential panels for the new stadium building were only released from Karachi Port on Sunday night, causing delays in installation. “It’s frustrating to face criticism when equipment and clearances aren’t provided on time,” Chohan remarked.

The renovations aim to deliver a “world-class experience,” but the readiness of the three venues remains uncertain. A source monitoring the construction work commented, “The stadiums may host matches, but whether they can deliver on promises of a world-class experience is yet to be seen.”

Upcoming Fixtures at Stake

Apart from the Champions Trophy, the stadiums are set to host a four-match tri-series involving New Zealand and South Africa from February 8 to 14. While tickets are already on sale, the PCB has not officially confirmed possession of the revamped venues.

ICC’s Involvement and Resignation of CEO

Adding to the turmoil, ICC CEO Geoff Allardice resigned recently. A board member hinted that Allardice’s inability to present a clear picture of Pakistan’s preparedness for the Champions Trophy may have contributed to his decision.

Despite assurances, the PCB faces mounting pressure to meet expectations for the international event. With the clock ticking, the focus remains on resolving logistical challenges and ensuring that the venues are ready to deliver a seamless experience for players and spectators alike.
