I’ve learned the hard way, after years of decorating rental properties and then two full home renovation projects, it is the rugs, mirrors, and lighting where I often end up blowing the budget.
I’m sure we can all remember the shock when we first moved out and realized the true cost of decorating a home from scratch. That’s why I’m making the most of the sales this weekend and finally investing in those finishing touch pieces I’ve had my eye on.
As someone who’s spent more hours than I’d like to admit comparing price tags on sconces and scrolling through the best rugs for my budget, I can confidently say that the Memorial Day home sales are the best time to add those items to my basket. For example, Wayfair has 70% off rugs with some amazing designer looks from Loloi and celeb designer collabs. I was also impressed to see a huge 60% off at Pottery Barn, which is always our go-to for high quality designs.

As a fan of the loud luxury trend, I was surprised by how much I love this neutral rug from the Chris Loves Julia x Loloi collab. But thanks to its easygoing yet elevated style, it’s a timeless piece that will still feel like an investment for years to come and can be worked into any interior design style.

Diana 4-Light Kitchen Island Pendant
Designed by Kelly Clarkson, no less, this pendant was created to be the perfect kitchen island lighting idea – and I think she’s nailed it. It oozes farmhouse style but remains sleek and modern thanks to the black metal and fresh white shades.
Floor lamps can often come with quite a hefty price tag, but not if you shop wisely. This elegantly arched floor lamp from Walmart caught my eye because of its wam, rattan shade, and sleek gold finish, but it was the $130 saving that had me heading to checkout.
Tali Wool/Viscose Blend Tufted Rug
Anthropologie is a great destination for home decor, but it isn’t equally the most budget-friendly. Luckily, they currently have up to 30% off in the holiday weekend sale, which means beautifully unique pieces like this hand-tufted, garden-inspired rug are just a touch more affordable.
Kate and Laurel Burlock Burlwood Oval Mirror
You might have noticed that the burl wood trend is ramping up this year, with everyone from high-end designers to budget retailers buying into this retro, statement finish. I love the dramatic knots on this mirror from Walmart.
Freya Scandi Hand Woven Wool Rug
My mission has been hunting down a vintage-inspired flatweave rug for my dining room. I’m particularly drawn to the Scandi style of this pistachio green rug from Joss & Main – it looks good enough to eat, and the pile isn’t too thick to be a nuisance when pulling out chairs at the table.
Bristol Wall Sconce, Aged Brass
One of my biggest bedroom lighting mistakes in my renovation was forgetting to add some wiring in for little reading lights by the bedside. Now I’ve had that rectified with new electrics, I’m picking up these wiggly and wavy brass sconces to add a luxe feel to my bedtime routine.

With 55% off, this beaded chandelier is a bit of a steal from the Wayfair sale. Typically, unique and large lighting like this is usually around double, if not triple, the price – particularly as it has six candle-style lights to beautifully illuminate your space.
While this isn’t the biggest mirror around, the stylish silhouette of this braided rattan is full of charm. I’d love to see it hung about the sink in a powder room or worked into a gallery wall. Perfect for the scalloped decor trend.
I’ve learned the hard way that waiting too long to buy big-ticket home accessories usually means missing out – or paying full price later. Rugs, mirrors, and lights might not be impulse buys, but when they’re on sale, it’s the perfect time to say yes.
